A short photographic remembrance of our good friend, Bob Oehrtman, who passed away July 1, 2009 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Teacher, scholar, scout leader, friend and father, Bob had a remarkable zest for life. Click on any of the photographs to see a larger image.
Bob and I were both proud owners of Sony Mavica digital cameras. He used his well into the 21st century.
When we traveled to Europe, I took only my Mavica camera. Bob was smart enough, however, to take a good 35 millimeter camera on the trip.
Over the years, Bob and I swapped lots of information about cameras, computers, and GPS units. He was always the trendsetter, owning a Commodore 64 many months before I bought an identical machine.
Never one to discard things, Bob likely never parted with that computer. His son Mike suspects that the old Commodore is still lurking in the Oehrtman garage. (NOTE: His son Mike later reported finding not just one, but two Commodore 64 units in Bob's garage.)

One of our first cool destinations in Europe (literally and figuratively) was a scenic area of Denmark along the Baltic Sea.
In Germany, we delighted in visiting with this couple -- Willi and Karin Specht. We met them while having lunch at the Kurhaus in Gemunde-Schleiden. We managed to also exchange addresses, resulting in their corresponding with the Oehrtmans -- and later the Millers -- over the years.
Willi or Karin Specht took this photo of Bob, Anne, Karen and Larry having lunch at the Kurhaus Gemunde.

Bob visits with his nieces and other family members and friends at Anne's memorial service in 2003.
We were in awe of how well Bob held up during this most difficult time. Still, as was evident to us in the months and few years following her death, a part of Bob's indefatigable spirit seemed to have died with her.

In May of 2005, while returning to South Dakota from a visit down south, we stopped in Stillwater and reunited with good friends Bob Oehrtman, and Bob and Grace Wetteman. Karen is at right.
Bob dedicated much of his life to education and helping young people. He served the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity for much of his professional life, and from 1979 until his death, he served as Pi Chapter adviser at Oklahoma State University.
He was co-chairman for numerous national convention committees and was recognized by the AGR fraternity nationally as an AGR Brother of the Century and Outstanding Adviser in 1983, 2000, and 2002, as well as Outstanding AGR Alumni for Pi Chapter in 1986. Then......in 2006, Bob was inducted into the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity's Hall of Fame, its highest honor.
Even as an emeritus professor, he delighted in helping recognize outstanding students and scholarship recipients, as he is shown doing in this photograph.
Although he excelled in research and publication, they were no substitute for what Bob loved doing the most -- teaching students in the classroom.
