• DAKOTA SISTERS - APRIL 2, 2013
Joyce Jefferson ~ Lillian Witt ~ Belinda Faye Joe-Rencountre

This program was presented with the support of the South Dakota Humanities Council. It shared the stories of three women from very different backgrounds and whose lives would intersect around the massacre at Wounded Knee, South Dakota in 1890.
 • More than 70 persons wandered out in the relatively balmy weather of early April to attend the monthly meeting of the Spearfish Area Historical Society. We normally meet on the first Tuesday of every month September through May.
 • Belinda Faye Joe-Rencountre portrayed Waste' Win

Belinda is a Dakota Hunkpati from her homeland of Fort Thompson. She comes from the Rencountre tiospaye (family) who taught her the meaning of Wadakota (Dakota way of life). A prophecy was made for Belinda that she would be the one who would achieve an education and she has achieved two Master Degrees in Education. Belinda believes in sharing many teachings through song, voice, dance, traditional and worldly teachings, and humor within a circle.
 • Lillian Witt was cast as Sadie Babcock.

Lillian grew up on a South Dakota ranch and attended small country grade school. She earned a B.A. in journalism/history at Chadron State College. She is a published author in Outside the Lines, a book of student essays published by by CSC to be used by history college professors, and Tenth Street Miscellany, a collection of stories and essays of graduating students. She is a free-lance writer for several local publications. Lillian is writing a children's book that -- as of April 2013 -- is almost ready for publication. Her proudest accomplishments are her six children and eleven grandchildren.
 • Joyce Jefferson played Mattie Elmira Richardson.

Joyce earned a B.S. in English at Black Hills State University. Through her business, Joyce Jefferson Creates Stories in Song, she provides performances that weave narration, poetry, and song. She is an independent scholar with the South Dakota Humanities Council. Joyce toured the nation edu-taining audiences about African American sheroes. She mounted an exhibition ofhistoric photographs called Corporals, Cooks, and Cowboys: African American Pioneers in the Black Hills at the Journey Museum in 2000. She also self-published Black & Other Friends, a book of poetry inspired by her research. An Air Force brat, Joyce married Earl in Hawaii and settled in South Dakota to raise three boys; she now has four wonderful grandchildren.
 • Contrasting cultures……but we're all related.
We counted about 110 people in attendance for this February meeting -- one of the best turnouts for the year.
 • HISTORIC FLOODS IN THE BLACK HILLS

The reference point for most of the discussion about Black Hills flooding was the June 1972 flood in Rapid City (top photo). The lower image is from June of 1907.
 • HISTORIC FLOODS IN THE BLACK HILLS
Dan Driscoll, USGS - February 5, 2013

Dan Driscoll did an excellent job of balance the science of flooding with an abundance of historic photos that vividly captured the impact of historic flooding in the region. This photo is from 1909 in the old mining town of Terry.

 • THE FASSBENDER COLLECTION
The Photography of Josef & George Fassbender

Paul Higbee and Betty Johnson - January 8, 2013

Writer Paul Higbee of Spearfish provided an overview of the Fassbender Collection, and Richard Carlson of Lead brought along a few of the some 800,000 images in this remarkable photo collection dating back to the late 1800's. A bonus was having Betty Johnson, the daughter of Josef Fassbender, attend the event and offer a few anecdotes about Black Hills Studio, which operated in the northern Black Hills for some six decades.
