Galey Media  > Military > WGBY at Guantanamo Bay
In the wake of the Cuban missile crisis, I was assigned to the Armed Forces Radio and Television station on the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay. My tour of duty (1964-65) was probably the most enjoyable of my years in the Navy. What follows are a few photos -- some a bit worn with time -- of the AFRTS facility (both the old building and then the newer one at the Morin Family Center), the base, and some of the people with whom I worked. Thanks to fellow Gitmo survivor Hank Harris for providing some of these photos. -- Larry Miller, Spearfish, SD

I believe this Gates control board and the turntables were salvaged from the Marine Bakery location and used in the Morin Center facility. But most of the television gear was all new.
After we reconnected via the internet and enjoyed a nostalgic telephone conversation in March 2012, old friend Hank Harris shared this photo of him at the WGBY-AM control board.
A couple of outside engineers, from the Army Supply Depot in Sacramento, California, I believe, supervised the installation of all the new television gear.
The back part of the building was the new home of the Gitmo Gazette.
A few months before I departed Gitmo, which occurred in early 1965, a small group of us navigated up to the broadcast tower, which offered a splendid view of the base on one side -- and the Caribbean on the other. That's Hank Harris on the left. The fellow on the right was a JO2. Nice fellow, but I don't remember his name.
Another shot of some of our crew up on the hill overlooking the base.
Taken from a postcard that was most likely created sometime in the 1950's. I believe this is the very street where our enlisted crew lived after re-locating the stations to the Morin Center. Families were -- for the most part -- gone from the base, and we were fortunate enough to land some units pretty close to our new work location. Much better than the barracks!
This is how I remember our living quarters when we moved in. They were, I believe, four-plexes.
And this is how our unit looked after we did some much-needed landscaping.
