Galey Media  > Military > WGBY at Guantanamo Bay
In the wake of the Cuban missile crisis, I was assigned to the Armed Forces Radio and Television station on the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay. My tour of duty (1964-65) was probably the most enjoyable of my years in the Navy. What follows are a few photos -- some a bit worn with time -- of the AFRTS facility (both the old building and then the newer one at the Morin Family Center), the base, and some of the people with whom I worked. Thanks to fellow Gitmo survivor Hank Harris for providing some of these photos. -- Larry Miller, Spearfish, SD

WGBY-AM-TV announcer Hank Harris with his twin-lense reflex camera.
Jack Meeks "catching some rays." There's someone on the roof, and I think he may have been aligning a television antenna.
Dale Dunlop was a JO3 who worked on the Gitmo Gazette and other print publications. Obviously, he had some gardening skills, too, as he handles the lawnmower here.
Paul Lanham. Thanks to Hank Harris for providing this photo.
Hank Harris had roots in the Denver area. In 2011, we finally hooked up via the internet. He is an attorney in California.
Miguel Fernandez was a Cuban national who worked on the base. He delivered Spanish language newscasts to our "shadow" Cuban audience. You'll find another photo of Miguel -- along with a short narrative -- on my Radio-TV Journal website. I often wonder whatever has become of him.
Jack Meeks shagging a throw from.....well, I'm not sure who that is. Could it be Lance Fredericks? I have no other photo of Lance, who was a terrific on-air person. He came to Gitmo from the AFRTS shortwave operation in New York City.
Paul Lanham and Hank Harris. I've totally lost track of Paul Lanham, but I think he may have been from West Virgina.
This fellow was a "Journalist Seaman Apprentice," or JOSA, when I knew him. I believe his name was Young, but we didn't serve together very long, so I don't remember his given name or where he was from.
