Attack Squadron One-Seventy-Two (VA-172) flew A-4 Skyhawk aircraft and had quite an illustrious history. These are a few photos of the aircraft and personnel in the early 1960s. The squadron was embarked aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt and was based at NAS Cecil Field, Florida, when ashore. Click on any of the accompanying photos to see a larger image.
The back of this photo from the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) Photo Lab says "Two A-4Ds of VA-12 are shown refueling over the Mediterranean Sea on a long-range mission." They got most of it right -- but those sure look like the "Blue Bolts" of VA-172 painted on the fuselages! Taken 21 July 1961.
