We have fond memories of breaking bread with Bill and Joan, Guy and Marion, and other good friends many Sundays following church services in Hummelstown.
Another shot of Joan and Bill Smith.
Joan and Bill Smith -- other good friends from Hummelstown, who joined us for the trip.

Bill had a great sense of humor and enjoyed life to the fullest. I'm sorry to report that he passed away last year (2008).

Joann Follette went to school off-and-on in Tinton during the early 1940s. She noted that the town had grown up around the mine, but there was also a bit of logging in the vicinity.

She recalled some of the teachers and interesting circumstances of education in "the hills."

Here, she shares information about the wretched Blizzard of 1949 and the enormous toll it took in the northern hills -- especially at Tinton. The map she is holding memorializes the little town and recalls that the Associated Press and United Press International carried stories across the country about Tinton in the "Plight of the Tiny Hamlet" caught in the fury of the blizzard. The map shows which families lived in Tinton and where they lived.

Joann and her husband Everett still have property not far Tinton and frequently steal away to enjoy the area.
