International broadcasters visit South Dakota Public Broadcasting in 1987
Technically, not a great photograph, but it conjures up memories of a delightful visit to Vermillion, South Dakota by a small group of international broadcasters from several countries – from Chile around the globe to India. This photo was shared with us by visitor Carmen Schmitt, an attendee who worked for "Teleonce" Television at the University of Chile in Santiago. The visitors met with staff and toured our radio and television facilities on the campus of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Later, they were guests at our home in Vermillion. Regrettably, I do not have a listing of our visitors and can not identify them in this photo. Our network executive director was Dave Leonard (shorter fellow with glasses in the middle of the back row) and his wife, Mary, also wearing glasses, is near the middle-left of the photo. I also see SDPB staffers. One of our senior engineers was Don Forseth (fourth from the left in this photo) and Shirley Sneve, our Minority Affairs producer is the lady with longer dark hair in the right-front part of the photo. My bride, Karen, is in the front row right (next to Shirley Sneve). I'm in the light-colored shirt at right, guarding the door! Will continue to search for other photos/information about this group. The visit was arranged by Lloyd D. Hagen of Ruckersville, Virginia. Mr. Hagen kindly wrote me a "thank you letter" in August of that year, writing that "...the program which you and your colleagues at SDPB organized for us stands out as one of the best on our entire trip. Thanks again for the thought and effort you put into making our stop in South Dakota a valuable professional experience. Also pass on my thanks to your wife for opening your home to us. I still remembers her excellent home-made ice cream!"
