Gene Mertens 1949-2023
We first came to know Eugene and Betty Jean Mertens through mutual good friends Chris and Belva Anderson. Like the Andersons, Eugene and Betty's roots were in south-central South Dakota. We're amazed at how quickly and deeply we became attached to these wonderful new friends, mostly through good times shared with them during the winter months in Mesa, Arizona.
Alas, Eugene was plagued with a variety of serious illnesses over many years, but none was able to hold him down. Perhaps they slowed him down and limited him a bit, but thanks to his indomitable spirit and strong character, coupled with an unbelievably supportive wife and family, his lifetime of accomplishments and good deeds surpassed those of most men we have known.
