BELMONT RAILROAD TUNNEL
Carved through a mass of solid butte rock in about 1888, this is Nebraska's only railroad tunnel. It is located on the Burlington-Northern Railroad about 10 miles southeast of Crawford. The tunnel was rebored and cemented in about 1920. From Crawford, trains must climb nearly 1,000 feet up Horshoe Bend, past Breezy Point, to reach the tunnel. Undated Color photo by Harold Pospeshil.
